after installing new light fittings and turning on the power there was a flash and the lights went out. now none of the lights on the ground and first floor work yet the lights on the second floor work, could it be a blown fuse? if so why did it happen could it be dodgy wiring by myself

yes.

blown fuse tripped mcb.

i bet you put all the reds with the reds and all the blacks with the blacks

its a common mistake.

lots of posts on here about how to do it right, also drawings in wiki and sticky forums

And if you have ****ty light switches.......it can confuse even more, as once you have actually wired the light correctly......the switch then doesn't work
