Linked Smoke Alarms

Hi, I have two smoke alarms, landing and hall, linked by a three core cable. I've buzzed the cable out and all is fine, but the two alarms dont sync, ie, if 1 goes off, the other doesnt. Any thoughts as to why? Should I just replace them?

Replacing them both will be the easiest solution
