Eric mentioned not giving advice on identifying the three cables when they have been disconnected un-marked from a ceiling rose

To give that advice when the communication is via a forum is high risk and best not given.

When the conversation is face to face or by telephone it is possible to determine if the person is capable of following instructions.

If, by the feedback they give, they appear able to safely do what is necessary to identify the cables then the advice can be given.

You can either say I am wrong, or you can simply give a better explanation

To just say a person is wrong is "training". To provide the knowledge that enables a person to discover for themselves they are wrong is education.

Education gives far more benefits than training ever can.

The problem with the forum is although the person starting the thread may understand, some one else can come latter and try to copy method and miss a bit.

I remember my dad towed a caravan with a Hillman Husky original not the imp. The tow bracket went behind the bumper, and two curved spacers clamped around the bumper so it looked as if the ball was connected to bumper, guy at work saw my dads car and tried to copy, when he tried towing caravan bumper came off. Ups.

So with this thread now 4 pages, we could describe something as a addition to the 4 preceding pages, but some one with an internet search is directed to last page so misses what was said previous. So I can say yes OK to use 2.5mm to supply your hob, and before that it explained how the hob was one of the special types that will work on 13A outlet, but reader does not read that bit and uses 2.5 mm for a 32A cooker.

But as to catering for those you don't check, where do you stop? My son and I argued about splitting a ring side to side rather than up down. Side to side uses less cable so better loop impedance, plus other advantages, however he said some one could test a down stairs socket see the MCB switched it off then open another down stairs socket which was live. I said maybe, but they are then not following procedure, they could also switch of a socket down stairs and then start working on one upstairs so what is the difference.

Be it that or diagonal cable runs, or any run out of safe zones you know it does happen so you should test. But there has to be a limit, I tested a cable for dead, full kit, proving unit the lot. It was in a box which had clearly had the cover missing for years, so you would hope all cables inside it were dead. I was lucky, I sawed through cable without a problem and dropped it to the ground, then it started to spark to the steel floor plates, seems the PLC had pulled in a contactor that made it live, lucky escape. Short of spiking the cable I had done everything, which is why we spike high voltage cables.

Even that can go wrong, my father-in-law had some contractors in to remove old cables, he told them all cables must be spiked before they are cut, there were some 11 kV ones around, he caught the guy with a road beaker spike about to drive it through cable with a sledge hammer. He had assumed the guy knew what spiking was, where you have a remote station to fire the spike through cable, and if it is live you have a rather spectacular result.

How far do you go to protect idiots?

OK I will admit having a thick partner who will do as they are told has been appealing some times, (stereotypical dumb blond) but I prefer a wife who can think for her self, even if it does means some arguments.

However if it needs a tool then it also requires some training, even birds who drop stones on shell fish have been trained by other birds, when we as humans train we should also include safety precautions in that training.

So it should be, this is a screwdriver, before removing screws please insure it is safe to do so, and it should be turned not used as something to stab people with. However at around 2 years old I have seen children given screwdrivers, OK plastic and not suitable to remove screws in a socket, but still teaching children to use screwdrivers before they can understand dangers may not be best move?

I know we should not comment on the way DIYnot admin acts, however to me we are not really talking about DIY admin, but about two people who on their own can be tolerated, and do give some good advice, but will not tolerate each other, and so on a regular basis, cause threads to be locked.
I agree that's what we should be talking about, but one of the protagonists has turned it into a public war with DIYnot Admin (which I don't personally think should happen or be allowed/tolerated), and others seem to be supporting him in so doing.

Kind Regards, John

They have certainly been conspicuous by their absence for a few days!

I have to say that in forums in which I have a management role, suspensions and bannings are usually publicly announced "pour encourager les autres", but that clearly doesn't happen here, leaving us having to guess/speculate!

Kind Regards, John
