What im after is some info on options to create a rafter length of 9.8m. I realise standard rafters are only not likely to be 10m long, and if this span is even a good idea.
Do i break the rafter in the middle at a support, and support it there on a steel beam, or do i get some other type of rafter other than the standard rafter, which is better at crossing such a span?
Reason is i want to extend the bungalow, increasing the ridge height, with a timber structure without effectively buiding another level, creating a large open space.
Any ideas or techniques, design info, links, pics, greatly appreciated.

You could join two shorter rafters on a steel (or timber if achievable) purlin, or create a complete steel frame

Use steel purlins to lessen the span...

Thanks, just what i was after. Are those rafters 7x2/5m long? And the beams 150x20?

I think the rafters were either 6" or 7" x 2". We bought lengths to suit. On the other side they were standard 4.8m lengths....

The purlins and ridge beam were 178mm x 102mm x19kg. The lesser beams were 152mm x 89mm.

If you ask your supplier, you can buy extraordinary lengths of timber. I think the longest we have bought is 6m
