We had some roof repairs made about 3 years ago but the mortar around the valley is crumbling and falling out.

Does 3 years sound too soon for this to be happening? It appears that this aspect and the mortar around the verges are not covered in any guarantee.

I am going to repair the work myself, and have been told that a 4 -1 mix using sharp sand and a small amount of PVA added to the water is the way to go. Any suggestions?

Tie your ladder(s) in and use a roof ladder(s).
The valley pointing can be gentlly eased out and a PVA solution can be neatly painted in, next point up with a 3:1 or 5:1 S&C.
To keep a neat line use a strip of masking tape on the lead.
By the way, movement can cause pointing to fail, so check that your valley lengths of lead dont exceed 1.5m in length each.
