low voltage reading

My sister in laws is having problems with her kitchen lights, so ive had a look and put a mft on it and found that there was 244v from live to earth but only between 130 and 188 v from live to neutral. i
also noticed that the said lights are connect some how to the hall lights ive tested back at the cu but found all ok am i missing something here regarding any ideas are gratefullt received.

I reckon you've got some series wiring going on there buddy.

Follow the neutral back and see where it's connected, my bet would be it's connected to what is actually a switched line. :cool:
 
Cheers mate by the look of it someone has messed with this aparently you couldnt switch on the lights in the kitchen unless one of the three way switches was on in the hall so im guessing this has something to do with it
 
Yep, that sounds about right.

The neutral from the kitchen light is connected to the SwLine in the hall, so it the hall light is off, the neutral from the kitchen light back-feeds through the hall light.

Most common reason for this is when someone tries to take a power feed from a lightswitch - they see a red and a black (or brown and blue) and think "Line and Neutral", when it is of course Line and SwLine! (and the SwL should be sleeved of course)
