low voltage v mains downlighters

Hi

I want 5 small halogen downlighters for my kitchen. they will replace a central ceiling cluster of three old spots. Looking in B&Q anything above 20 watt lights seem to be 'Transformer Free' ie mains voltage. I was thinking of 5 x 50 watt. Are they available low voltage? If so, what are the pros and cons of the two routes?

low voltage involves a transformer, whihc is extra bulk and hassle but in lumens per watt, the lights are more efficient. perhaps a personal aesthetic thing as well.

One thing I was interested in was bulb failure. I seem to hear a lot about having to replace bulbs very frequently. Is 12v more prone to this than mains? Anyone with any experience?
