I wasn't advising you to be deliberately dishonest by the way. Sometimes lead can look like galvanised steel (especially if only a small section is exposed in a trial dig).

The use of lead was much more widespread than steel so with pre 1970 properties it would be prudent to assume lead unless absolutely certain it is of another material.
 
The part that I saw in a trench that was dug to relay some drains, like you say, looked like lead. There was also a mixture of lead and steel in the house (which has now all gone), so it would not be unreasonable to go down that route.
