Lowering ground level below DPC

Hi all,
I've got to lower the ground level of my stone walled house to below the DPC. Digging out itself is relatively trivial - most of it is just topsoil - but are there any surprises I should watch out for? I'll have to be careful around the soil stack, obviously. Anything else people have discovered while doing this?
