M/S Word

Running m/s word 2002 on XP.
When I open a blank document the word task pane also opens. I go Tools-Customize-Toolbars & untick task pane, which closes the task pane. If I then close word & reopen the task pane appears again. How can I make this stay off.

I've not used this version for a while, so forgive me if not correct, but I think the setting is under Tools>Options>View. There should be a Startup task pane option.
