I was driving along the M62 the other day - as you do, when I noticed something. There are little rectangular portrait-oriented signs at the side of the road, every so often, perhaps 800 metres, on both sides. They state

M62
A (A is shown on the eastbound side, its a different letter westbound)
(a seemingly random number, growing with distance from Manchester)

Cant remember the letter or number patterns westbound, but does anyone know what these signs mean?

I also didnt see the "UK's highest motorway" sign on my way across the tops, has it been removed, or did i just not see it because of the wind and rain and white-out conditions?

These are location markers to identify where you are on the motorway

The carriageways are A or B , in general A is Away from London and B is Back to London (or nearest big reference city for roads not connected to London).

Slip roads and short inter motorway carriage sections take alphas C and beyond

They give the same locational information as that on the 100 metre posts but in a font size that is easier to read from a moving vehicle.
