main lights question

hi,
is it possible to put somekind of light timer on a main light on the celing . silly question i know but there is a good reason for asking and cannot find the answer anywhere else.

What would start the timing? There are lots of options like:

Someone pressing a button, someone entering the room?

my friend past away a few weeks ago and her house is empty and tonight her hallway light has come on i live opposit her house and saw it come on

Replace existing light switch. Check for compatibility with CFLS / halogens etc.
