Hi hope you can advise.

I live in a hard water area and my hot water cistern seems to be suffering under the weight of scale.

Can i clean cheaply and easily or do i have to take the root of puchasing a new one??

Use a descaller and clean it. If it is more than a couple of years or so old replacing it will also require a replacement pan as lower flush capacities are now used.

Thank you for your replies. I had a new elimant installed last week with the hope my hot water to my flat would improve. The guy who did it suggested the cylinder is scaled up but should not cause a major problem. But it really is how to get inside it and clean. Can i buy cheaply a chemical cleaner or is thier some old wifes tail that may help me?

Hi thanks that really is helpful. Any idea where i could buy and how i would put it into the cistern without killing myself!!!

any descent plumbers merchants.

have a read of the link tells you how do everything.

you might also consider fitting a water softener on the feed to the cold tank that feeds the hot cylinder.

not only will this prevent future scale buildup, and give you much nice water in your bath, shower etc, it will also (slowly) dissolve the old scale.

I mean a proper ion-exchange softener that you recharge with salt, not a magic magnet
