Social division, anger and distrust is growing in the UK and beyond. Extremist violence and abuse is escalating and racism and anti-migrant rhetoric is reaching the mainstream.

The Guardian's 2025 charity appeal is supporting grassroots charities at the heart of local neighbourhoods that bring hope through practical initiatives to change communities for the better. They nurture pride, empathy and hope, making positive human connections and establishing common values.

Donations will be shared between our five appeal partners: Citizens UK, The Linking Network, Locality, Hope Unlimited Charitable Trust and Who Is Your Neighbour?

You seem to be winding yourself up into a Daily Mail Reform frenzy.

why weren’t people fed up in 2022 when 45,774 came by small boat
why weren’t people fed up in 2023 when over Tories houses asylum seekers in over 400 hotels
why weren’t people fed up with 1 million net migration

I think it is because 90% of Reform supporters, voted for Boris Johnson which oversaw the above events, and now they projecting their anger on Labour.

Did you vote for Boris Johnson?

in fairness people have been fed up with the small boat migrants for quite a few years, certainly well befor 2022

truth is no party has a clue what to do about it, they would all like to but can't

and people are kidding themselves if they think reform will make any difference,

I would agree that people have been voting for parties who claim they will reduce immigration for quite some time. The odd thing is that those parties do not follow through on their promises. Totally understandable why someone would say that Reform will be the same: in fact, you may have to be batty to believe that, finally, a politician will do what they say.

I actually think that we as a nation are extremely tolerant: but maybe another way of looking at things is that we are too tolerant. Maybe this is where too much tolerance lands you?

That's interesting.

Please show me an example of someone shouting racist at a thing that in your opinion is not racist.

Forget history at your peril.

We've been here before, and it's dangerous
This is of course true.

However, recent UK governments haven't helped the situation by allowing the significant increase in migrants coming in via unapproved routes.

I'll say again, it's almost irrelevant if e.g. the number of small boat migrants isn't significant in the grand scheme of things, it's the optics of it that don't play well with the public. Hence why government should have thrown a few billion at the issue a few years back when the increase in numbers was noted.

Also, surprise surprise, some folk don't like dozens upon dozens of migrants (predominantly men) being put up in hotels etc in their community.

Why are the British people expected to just shut up, suck this up, and put up with it? Especially when it's our money that's paying for all of this.

Yes we've been here before, the fact we're maybe getting there again is down to the abject failure of western governments to deal with the situation in a manner that puts their own people first.
