... is there an easy way? I've drilled some 38mm blind holes in timber with a spade bit. They were to hold tea lights. they work fine. With one kine of tea light, but there are other sizes. Who knew!

Cheers

Do you have a lathe?

Other than glueing in a 38mm diameter plug, then drilling the 40mm, I think you're a bit stuck!

Even using a drill press with the workpiece clamped down won't go well, the bit will chatter and snag like crazy.

hole cutter and chisel out the remainder?

Blacksmiths drill (would cost a bit)

Sandpaper and time?

What about banging an oblong(ish) piece of 38mm wood in the hole so that the point of a 40mm spade bit can start in the centre? Something like this:

Get a 40mm Forstner bit, and use it through a piece of scrap wood. Position this scrap over the 38mm hole, and clamp it or push hard on it.

Use this to get the bit started :)

Get a 40mm hole saw and drill hole in a bit of scrap wood. Put the piece that ends up in the middle of the hole saw in the existing 38mm hole and secure it in place with another piece of wood underneath. The hole in the centre of the piece you've inserted will then give you the guide you need to start the new hole with the 40mm hole saw.
