We have a wood and fibreglass veranda over our backdoor. The underside consists of wooden beams with chipboard on top. There's also a plastic skylight.
Unfortunately someone painted the beams and chipboard with Crown Matt Vinyl emulsion and I don't think he used a primer. (Doh!) One year later, this paint is now peeling off. I've tried scraping the paint off, but it was very hard work even with a heat gun.
My challenge is to make a presentable painted ceiling on the underside.
My ideas so far are
(1) an epic amount of sanding and filling of the chipboard, then paint with Zinser CoverStain and Dulux Weathershield
(2) tongue and groove cladding
(3) plywood panels
An open question is whether cladding should be nailed to the beams or the chipboard. I was also wondering whether thermal expansion of the cladding would be an issue. The furthest edge in the photo might get splashed with water when it rains.
Any constructive comments welcome!
