It's the first growing season at our new house and granted, the garden is not very big, but I'm getting ideas of a two-tier raised bed along the sunny side (about 5 metres long) -- tall plants in the taller top tier and shorter plants in the front.

The house is made of stone, and is in a conservation area, so naturally I'm thinking making the bed also with stone. There's a reclamation yard nearby; hopefully I can get the material from them.

I'm sure it'll look very nice and all, but before I wind up with a pile of stone in my yard gathering moss, does anyone have any advice? It is ridiculously difficult?

Many thanks :D

And of course the golden question -- is stone expensive?

fairly easy if you lay them dry, just need a bit of patience to do it. It can be very expensive though. Best to go for something like a split york stone so it has flat faces to lay.

Thanks Thermo, I'll check out the reclamation yard and see what they have. Though I'll probably come to my senses, get some old barrels and call it a day.
