I'm planning on buying a Stihl MS251, but then saw a Makita DCS 5030.

The cost of a Makita is £70-100 cheaper than the Stihl, and has a larger BHP output.

Makita 50cc (3.7bhp)

Stihl45cc (3.0bhp)

I've never bought a Makita when it comes to Chainsaws, just cordless drills.

As far as the word on the 'street' goes, it's Stihl.

I need some help guys; Stihl or Makita?

I've got a Makita chainsaw and have no problems with it. As you say, it's more powerfull than the Stihl and cheaper, they are made by Dolmar in Germany who invented the chainsaw.
I've got a Stihl brushcutter that needed a new ignition pack after 18 months, so nothing is perfect.[/u]
