This article shows a timescale of actions needed to achieve net zero. The loony "FIRES" group of government advisors want all British airports, except Heathrow, Glasgow and Belfast, to close by 2029.

So me having to drive to Heathrow 250 mls or Glasgow 400 mls instead of the 10 mls to Exeter airport is going to help save the planet , "Holy Mary love us and save us"

No they don't. Did you read their report?

I suppose society largely accepts whatever environment it lives/functions in, so however all this net zero stuff plays out over coming years/decades, society will adapt. My concern over some of what's proposed is it could create even more of a 'them and us' society e.g. if affordable international travel decreases, logic tells you it'll become the preserve of those with money as it was decades ago. The same with EVs. At present, those on lower incomes can run a 15 year old Corsa on not very much money. If the same isn't achievable with EVs, that's another mode of transport that people on lower incomes will be priced out of.

As I've said in other threads around this, I'm just pleased that I'm now in my 50s with maybe ~30 years left before I peg it. I'll have lived my life going where I want, when I want, in the type of vehicle I want and eating what I want with little in the way of restriction. No doubt some people would refer to that as a selfish attitude, perhaps it is. I don't really care. As I've said before, if older generations have fecked things up, let the younger ones sort it out. They'll realise life isn't as black and white when it comes to making socioeconomic/political decisions.

I really dont understand the logic here. You are a brexiteer you hate anyone who is a foreigner and don't travel so why are you upset?

Environment changes - there are more people so there is more demand and more use of resources etc

Get one of these new long lorries, stick a Taxi sign on top, charge people a reasonable fare to take them to the airport when you are going. Jobs a winner! You use a bigger lorry so carbon footprint is smaller, you get a few quid towards fuel, ;), and more people get to the airport with less cars on the road causing congestion.

As for the younger generation blaming us 'oldies' for the climate crisis!
We were the generation that got our fish and chips in old newspapers, drank our lemonade from glass bottles and then got our deposit back when we took it back to the shop. we bought our sweets in little paper bags/cones. Nothing was wrapped in plastic/clingfilm/shrinkwrap. All glass was infinitely recyclable, and we just put it in the dustbin, which would then be sorted at the depot. We used shopping baskets, hessian bags and paper carrier bags to carry our groceries home. We walked to most places that were within walking distance or got public transport if going further afield. Yes, we burned fossil fuels, because at the time we believed we had an inexhaustible supply and the by-products, soot and ashes, were recycled in the garden or the chimney sweep would sell the soot to farmers for fertiliser or to manufacturing companies for use in things like wool dye.

I think youngsters should cover a specialised era in their history lessons entitles, 'Where we youngsters got it wrong'.
