I'm just about to fit a mantelpiece which has come supplied with slate slips. It all looks pretty straight forward and I've taken advice from a fitter as to what to do and what order things should be done in. However, when I got home, I relaised that I had a 2.5" rebate and 3/4" thick slate slip. Obviously the slate slip will be flush with the back of the mantelpiece rebate, but how should I make up the shortfall in the back? I have to build up around 1.75" and then fill the hole so that it is flush with the builder's opening! I'm thinking of rendering the hole with a mix of sand, cement and lime but I suppose I'll have to put something in the gap so that I can push against it with the float. I'm thinking of layering some fireboard, using some no more nails. Anyone with any other ideas?
