Hi all

I was hoping someone might be able to help me!

We have recently moved into a new house and it has a fireplace with a marble surround. It has a yellow tinge to the marble and today I realised it’s a very thin film of something which can be scraped off - but this is also really hard work and I’m worried I’m going to damage the marble.

Does anyone know what this film is or whether there is something that can be used to remove it or soften it?

It looks like the surround might have been painted previously and someone has removed the paint.

I’ve attached some photos.

Thanks in advance!!

Looks like a varnish, but guessing. So maybe a liquid varnish/paint remover, or possibly alcohol.
