I’m currently deciding what tile to go for to replace the existing Redland 49’s on my 60’s bungalow. I think I’ve narrowed it down to either the Marley Modern (or possibly the Duo version) or Redland Renown.

I prefer the look of the Marley Modern, but having done some research, it sounds like there’s potentially some disadvantages to going for this:

- Flat tiles are less tolerant of roof imperfections. My roof definitely has some given its an older property.
- Profile tiles can offer better impact resistance due to the curves on the profile deflecting impacts. I’m looking forward and considering how well it may deal with say large hail impacts (not a problem really yet in the UK, but who knows with climate change!)

I’m also planning on installing on-roof (not in-roof) solar panels, which I think is slightly easier for flat tiles?

Wanted to get some opinions on whether these things matter in practice?

If you're replacing your roof, then it is surely better to take the opportunity to go for "in-roof" solar panels. On roof panels give issues with bird nests under the panels and any repairs to tiles under them need the panels to be removed. I'm also not convinced that the brackets holding the panels in place won't eventually rust badly, affecting their strength.

In-roof is something I’ve considered, but on balance I feel on-roof is the safer option - in-roof panel systems aren’t really standardised in the same way, so if they need replacing it might be difficult to get like for like. There’s also fewer installer options, and the small hit to efficiency.

The bird nest issue is valid but easily mitigated with netting / edging around the panels.

Marley Mendip - from a roofers POV.

I hate Moderns.

Interesting - what is it about them that puts you off?
They are lousy to work on top of. Snap like digestive biscuits. Not brill' when it comes to roof window flashing either.

They look ok ish though...

Ah I see, thanks for the insight. Yes I like the look of them, the fact they break easily is concerning though - durability is the most important thing to me! So I think that probably swings it for the profile tiles for me.

It's more when you are scrambling on top of them, rather than their overall durability. Once the roof is finished there is little difference in that respect.
