Just made a major DIY disaster I have painted my walls with Gloss White Paint. I thought it was matt I had picked up, didnt realise until about 2 mins ago when I touched the walls and they still werent dry. Then I looked at the tin and it says DELUX Gloss.

Now my question is can I paint matt over the top of gloss or is it a complete no go?

Didn't you smell it?

Leave it to dry then go over with an oil based eggshell. If you don't like the eggshell (you may though) then go over it with a matt.

Otherwise cover it with an oil based undercoat then matt.

So get an oil based undercoat then matt? Thanks.

Really cant believe I done this. Never going to live it down.

Assuming it was an oil-based gloss (or rather a solvent-based gloss). Does it say High, medium or Low VOC on the tin?

Phoned an in-law of an in-law who has been a painter and decorator for 40 years and he said just go over it with a white matt. Done that and it looks fine. Giving another coat of white matt tonight before I go near it with a colour.

I paint glossed ceilings with white matt all the time and have never had any problems. Two coats will do the job fine. Some people's advice unneccessarily complicates the problem I think and just confuses people like yourself who just want a simple answer.

You can paint old gloss with plain old matt but when it's just freshly painted it's likely to peel. When it's fresh it's highly waterproof and the matt has nothing to grip onto.
