Hey!

You can download some av clients for free, they are usually quite good.
Try http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html - not bad. AVG http://www.grisoft.com used to offer a free scanner as did Panda.
Check this guys website out for more info on free and subscription AV:
http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/#scanners

If you're going to pay, Mcafee, Symantec or Sophos are the three big hitters and are usually quite dependable. Remeber, you need to check for updates at minimum on a weekly basis, else you'll get infected all the same.

Mcafee should be fine, however as mentioned earlier in the thread there are free scanners available which are quite good. I run AVG myself and haven't had any problems. Although some people do report the occasional glitch, but that could be down to other software running on their systems. Give the free ones a go first before shelling out your cash.

I agree with nstreet. AVG with Spybot or Microsoft Antispyware are a good combination of freebies, but a search for free antivirus and antispyware in google will supply a more than adequate list.

As for the premium offerings, Bitdefender & F-secure are quite good.
