Hi 1st post, hope I express this clearly. My D.I.L. and a friend are building a cupboard in the lounge, son doing all the cutting. D.I.L wants the walls of the alcove and the MDF doors of the cupboard painted the same colour. Is there a paint that will cover both surfaces. They will be using a primer on the doors

You can get emulsion for walls and water-based satin for wood mixed to the same colour, from most of the brands.

You will find that walls in matt and units in eggshell or satin will look very, very slightly different. It is down to the way that the light refracts off each of the paints.

You can buy matt paints suitable for the MDF but they will be difficult to keep clean.

Years ago, I specialised in hand painting MDF cabinets (bookcases, wardrobes, etc). I used oil based eggshell because it is far more durable than waterbased finishes and provided a higher quality of finish (tramlines((brush marks)) were more shallow). I completely understand why people use waterbased finishes but, overtime, the oils in the skin on your hands makes the paint soft, so much that it will scrape off with your fingernail.

Downsides to oil based- smells, longer times between coats, more difficult to clean brushes, they yellow in the absence of light.
