MDF finishing / polishing / lacquer ?

hey, just found this site and could do with your help
im doing a universtiy project on kids roleplay furniture and the company we are working with uses ply and mdf as their main materials, usually with a melamine (think thats how you say it) finish, just wondering if it is at all possible to polish bare mdf to a high gloss ie french polish finish

any help / links / info would be gratefully received

You can polish but with no grain to it you might as well just varnish as the finish will look the same, remember child friendly furniture must be chewable as they will.
