Megaflo Combination Valve Dripping

Hello All,

I’m trying to clean the filter of the Heatrae cold water combination valve on a Megaflo system, as it has developed a small leak from the very end of the cartridge, by following the helpful guide here https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/megaflo-dripping-valve.200567/#post-2524557 and double checking it against the official Megaflo How-to video.

I also plan on recharging the air gap once I have cleaned the filter.

Both processes involve opening the hot water on a tap downstairs until no more water flows, then open the PRV valve on the megaflo.

The first problem I run into was that the isolation valve (which as you see in the photos is part of the combination valve) was properly stuck. After some convincing with joint pliers, it now turns – although my hope is that it’s not just the black plastic cap that’s turning, but it doesn't seem so...

In any case, just to make sure, I also turned off the main water stop cock for the whole house.

Even so, when I opened a downstairs tap to run the hot water, and then go to open the PRV valve, a decent amount of hot water keeps coming out of the tap even after five minutes or so, and even after the PRV valve has stopped discharging anything in the tundish.

I’ve tried doing so twice in a row now, and must have removed a lot of hot water from the cylinder, but it still flows hot. After a good while I stopped as I didn't want to completely drain the cylinder. Could it be the isolation valve is no longer working and it is stuck in the open position even though I can now turn the handle a quarter turn? Even so, that should not be a problem as the mains water is definitely off.

Anybody has any idea as to what the issue could be please? I'm attaching a couple of photos of the megaflo setup. Thank you.

Open all of the hot taps and showers (set to hot) you have, If you have isolated it the water will stop after a while, if not it will run hot then transition to cold as the cold enters the cylinder to replace the hot draining out.

It can take a long time for the hot to stop if you are just draining it using one hot tap. Once the upper taps/showers stop close these off and drain the last out with the lowest hot tap thats still open.

Then, once refilled bleed the air out of all hot taps/showers. A towel over the sink with the hot fully open will prevent the air/water mixture from spluttering water all over the bathroom!
