Hi
I only have electric in my home

I have a megaflo that heats the water. Next to it there are 2 switches. The top one is on (though the red light under the switch isn't on)

The lower one is just turned off.

Does this sound right? Why is this?

Thanks for your help!

You might have 2 immersion heaters in your cylinder. One will power the upper immersion, heating about half the cylinder and the other might turn on the lower immersion heater, which would heat the full cylinder. Without a picture thats my best guess.

Normally the bottom one is on economy 7 (off peak) and cheaper to run, and the top one is for a boost.

Depends what you have there, and how much water you use.

Ok, I have 2 things on the heater each connected to a different socket.

The top one goes to the bottom switch and that is off

The bottom one goes the top switch, which is turned on (though the red light doesn't seem to be on ATM)

Underneath both of these is another switch which is turned on, but doesn't seem to be connected to the megaflo.

I have econ 7 tariff (or something similar when it also heats up for 2 hours at some point in the day)

So does that mean my econ 7 switch is turned on and is heating the bottom bit???

Thank you!

If the bottom immersion is on then yes, you are heating the whole cylinder. You should have a timer somewhere. Make sure that you programme it to come on during economy 7 hours. With regards to the other switch, it will be for something else. Also the neonlight on the switch will prob come on during the programmed times. If not the bulbs gone, but not a problem!

Sounds like you might be on economy 10, gives you 10hrs off peak, 5 hrs overnight, 3 mid afternoon and 2 in evening. That will be wired via the smart timer to the part of the fusebox that the switch is connected to & activates only during the designated off peak times to power the main immersion element. Those times are preset by the leccy supplier and cannot be adjusted.
Do you have storage heaters too?

Yeah I do have storage heaters too. The seem to work.
I just wanted to check that the water wasn't costing a bomb.
I'm not used to no gas!
