I am moving my oil tank. All my fixings are 10mm compression. When I come to disconnect the oil tank (fitted about 15 yours ago) i slipped the olive over the pipe and it was very loose. Can I assume that it is 8mm or are there other sizes?

It depends on when it was fitted.

Metric pipe started being used about 1970 but some was still being used up later.

You might have 3/8" which is about 9.5 mm so would be a little loose for 10 mm. Compression fittings with copper ( not brass ) olives would probably work OK though.

Solder fittings would normally work OK though.

Thanks for the helpful replies

Solder fittings I think is out of the question as this is oil.

I now have my copper olives, would it be an idea to put a few turns of ptfe tape round the pipe to give the olive a tighter fit? I also intend to use a smattering of jointing compound.

Oil is an unforgiving liquid. If the olives look to be ok use some Heldite sealing compound... but if in doubt try 8mm fittings and adapt to 10mm...

or replace the oil line if you are really stuck!

There is a little complication over what kind of joint to use.

Some say dont solder because oil attacks solder.

Others say a straight compression joint is not acceptable either.

Some say dont solder because in a fire the solder will melt. But then gas pipes can be soldered!

No - but hermetite will be - same size tube - different shop (motor spares)

I think you would find that OFTEC recommend flared joints only and not compression.
But saying that not many wholesalers have them in stock.

But the motor trade have all the bits as they are the type used for brake tubing.
