Missing Messages

I've pm'd a confirmed "friend" and after sending it I get the message that the pm has been sent successfully.

However, the intended recipient hasn't received it yet and my outbox is empty. I've had a pm from him which I've replied to, again to no avail

Any ideas of what the score is?
