Mortar type

I'm in a similar situation, need to repoint but am not sure whether I have lime mortar ( pics ). Mine also doesn't fizz but is much more grey in colour. You think they'd have come up with a easy solution for determining what it is....if it indeed is so important.

Is it true that you can use lime mortar instead of normal sand cement anyway but not the other way around ??

I've found so much stuff online of people having their houses being repointed with the incorrect mix I don't think many builders are or were that clued up about it. Even if I wasn't going to repoint the house myself I think I'd have to go through the same learning hoops just to do the due diligence part which is why this website is so amazing. You do raise an interesting point about the lime mortar, I think there's a thread on here discussing it, best look it up or maybe someone will chime in. You can get the old mortar composition tested but it costs.
