Motor overheating ...

I have an old electric table saw I use for cutting up off-cuts for firewood. When it's been running for about five minutes the motor overheats and the saw cuts out. I'm wondering whether it's a throw or fix job.The motor is an AEG.

The reason I ask, is that just to get anybody to have a look at anything here is costly but I definitely need the saw. A replacement will cost around 900€.

Not an electrician.
But a retired maintenance fitter in a door manufacturing factory, with allot of varied wood working machines. It is not difficult to strip an electric motor, probably needs cleaning out (sawdust gets everywhere) & lube the bearings or replace same.

JonB. O.K. I'll give that a go. Never done it before but I don't think I can make it any worse. One thing I will ask though, is there a special grease for electric motor bearings.

First I would mark the casing felt tip or centre pop,
We seldom bothered with cleaning the bearings just replaced with new sealed ones probably any high speed grease would do.
I dont know if you have bought bearings before but they are measured by the bore the outside diameter & the width also they might be open both sides sealed one side or two. The seals might be tin called shielded or Rubber sealed which is better. I have a bearing book hidden away so could give you the part numbers if you send the size in metric or imperial.
If the motor is a brush motor you might want change the brushes at the same time.

At the risk of stating the obvious, check that the blade is sharp; a blunt blade will tend to overload the motor.

The blades in good nick. I'm not real hard on machines so they last me for a while. JonB. I'll have to wait until the morning to go further as the motor has those protruding screw heads and I'll have to go and buy the right bit

Has anyone out there seen these type of screws before? I've searched all over the internet and can't find a thing. I can't find anything to undo them.

Slick they might be through bolts, that looks like the head ,mind I havn't seen owt like that. What is on the other end??

Jon, you're not on your own there. I showed them to a guy yesterday who started off life as a tool maker and has been a salesman for specialist tools for the last 25 years in Germany and has never seen anything like them.

The screws run the length of the motor to a cover on the other end which the threaded ends of the screws, screw into

I have some hardened steel rod in the workshop which I am going to cut a slot in the end and then lock a pair of vice grips on to the rod to try and get them started. Will have to see what happens.....

looks like a damn good blow over with an air line would fix most of your problems there!
