Mountfield 1538M-SD gear problem and cutout. Engine starts and runs, when gear engaged engine cuts out. Have replaced deck tension adjuster, still cuts out when gear/deck engaged, any ideas please.

These machines have several safety interlock switches which need to work correctly to prevent what you are experiencing, so try to identify them, especially on the transmission and deck areas.
The good news is that unplugging them restores normal service!

Will check the switches out over next few days, thanks for reply, helpful to know that the switches can be unplugged.

Good luck with it Tom, and if it was mine I'd be looking for things in the clutch pedal area first.
The under seat switch is known to be an issue.

Don't the switches prevent the starter motor from working as well as cutting out the engine in certain circumstances.

Yes, some of them are dual function.
On my ancient (2002) machine I have some of them disconnected - but it's only me that uses it.
