Hi I wonder if anyone can advise. I have an old fashioned back boiler and when I turn it on the fires that heat up the water stay on constantly. I have to keep switching it off by the electric for 5 mins then back on again, to get some hot water in the tank. Any help please ?.

Sorry brenda your explanation is too vague can you give us some more information please ? it would really help if you could take pics of your airing cupboard so we can work out what system you have , dont worry about pics of the boiler we know what that looks like, when you say the flames dont go off do you mean regardless of whether you have the programmer switched to call for heat or not the boiler still comes on ?

Thanks Ian. Don't have an airing cupboard. When I click the switch on the box on the wall to hot water and turn on the electric, there are loads of little flames that come behind the fire. Usually they stay on a few minutes then go off and come on again all the time til I turn off the electric. But now the flames come on and stay on all the time. I have to turn off by the electric switch to stop the flames. I didn't realise the other day and after only half hour the water was boiling (only on number 2 setting) and the radiator in the bathroom was red hoy. Didn't even have the heating on.

sounds like your boiler control stat or possibly the PCB needs replacing , this is not something you could do yourself , you will need a Registered Gas Installer to do this for you, when calling ask the engineer if he has experience of your back boiler as its a very old appliance now and lots of new folks will tell you that you need a new boiler but you should be able to get this sorted, if you post where in the country you are someone might be able to either offer their services or recommend someone near you

Thank you so much for your advice Ian. Going away for a couple of weeks so will try to sort it when I come back. Thanks again.
