mystery sound coming from roof - help!

Had a pidgeon in a chinmey for about a month. Finally figurd out where the racket was actually coming from, took the top of the firegrate out, and hey presto there it was, sat on top of the backplate. After some gentle coaxing, it dropped down and after a few minutes figured out how to fly out through the open window. If you shine a light they will follow it to the exit.

A pigeon in there for a month and still alive?
Must have had a pretty big pack lunch with it.
