Is there a decent (powerful) fan out there that can effectively stop backdrafts and does not have noisy flaps?

I have a kitchen fan and a bathroom fan that are both on west facing walls. There are dirctly facing strong westerly winds so there is a fair amount of drafts that come in. I've tried fitting all manner of cowls and flaps and they just end up flapping, making lots of noise and allowing drafts in.

What do you guys think is the most effective fan/backdraft sytem that will provide good extraction, no backdraft and no noisy flaps. Is there something that has an electronic shutter of some sort that only opens when powered on?

You may like to consider a fan that has its own backdraught shutter - similar to Toolstations 58082. The shutter only opens when the fan is running, and therefore should reduce the flapping of the external louvres.

Ask on the Electrical forum  I`ve seen one with an iris shutter- and I think it was a good quality one ;)

Hi Seneca,

What was your conclusion on this?

I have Vent Axia fans installed in two bathrooms (both in extension parts of the house on angled roofs) with mechanical shutters. While they provide fairly good back draught protection, I can still get cold air seeping around the closed shutters if it is particularly windy outside.

VA-100 - http://www.vent-axia.com/range/va100-range.html

They are fairly quiet, but I have often wondered if there if a better solution out there. Something that perfectly seals any air coming in from the outside.

Thanks,
Matt
