Need for rewire

When looking at the cable in an installation if the cable is old the installation will require rewiring.


If cable is PVC is there a rule of thumb that determines if the cable is ageing and requires rewiring?

Yes there is a rule of thumb. Conduct tests to BS 7671 and ascertain whether the cable is ok.

Insulation test, and inspection for cracking and splitting when flexed. Usually these two go together. If the cable has been run at full load about 20 years is typical. Less if over run or overheated by poor siting, or in sunlight, vastly longer (predicted more than 70 years at 30 degrees) if run cold.
