When undertaking a rewire for say a house, is it usual practice to replace all the cables? Is there a case for retaining any cabling? Does a rewire include adding and/or moving existing sockets/switches.

If you're lucky then you may be able to pull cables through the existing conduit but in many homes these are not used and the cables may just be protected by capping behind the plaster or just buried behind the plaster and you'll find you cannot pull them. Also very few feeds to sockets are in suitable conduit to allow you to pull then through so you'll probably need to chase these out.
