Need help on damp caused by QUARRY TILES

I have a 100 year old victorian terrace. We know that the middle room and room under the stairs have quarry tiles. Just recently I have noticed a wet patch in the front room just above the skirting board. I have been told it it probably because of the quarry tiles. Could someone explain to me what is happening as i am a newbie to diy. Rather than pay someone to do the job i would like to fix the problem myself. Any help/advice to help me overcome this would be very much appreciated.

A lot of quarry tiles in that age of house were laid straight on the soil or on a lime mortar bed, with no damp-proof membrane like a modern floor has. This was done particularly in the kitchen. Lift one up and have a look if you can.

Thanks, if i do find soil do i need to lay membrane on top of the tiles or underneath or remove the tiles completely?

Do a search on the forum about damp/floor construction and you will read some useful stuff, then ask what you don't understand I think is best.

The only problem you may have is the damp or moisture could spread to somewhere else. As shaggy say do a search here but there is another forum here that deal with older properties, let us know how you get on !
