Hello all,

Working on a house refurb at the mo, house has been pulled to bits, re plumbed, re wired, walls removed, plastered etc.

Bc have been involved in some steels, that's it.

Upstairs will have new standard rads, on trvs, downstairs will have new column type rads (cast iron look rads)

We don't want to fit standard trvs because they won't be in keeping with the look of the rads, customers want traditional type rad valves.

Do we need to need to fit trvs?

Thanks in advance.

No it will be fine without and use the wall thermostat downstairs.
It will switch the radiators off as required.

TRVs generally give more trouble than they are worth.

Trv's need a constant passing supply of hot water to function correctly.

If the house has a room thermostat on the ground floor controlling the boiler and pump, this roomstat will shut down the boiler and pump when the room reaches the roomstat preset temperature. At this stage the first floor TRV's will have no water supply and therefore cannot provide heating.

If TRV's are fitted to an existing system throughout, the roomstat will have to be turned right up, and the TRV's will control the room temperature. When all or most TRV's are satisfied and shut off or down, the water temperatur will increase until the boiler thermostat shuts the boiler (and pump) down.

For 30 years I have run the complete house on TRV's throughout and no roomstat quite satisfacorily and economically.

If you have already installed TRV's upstairs they can be used as a normal radiator valve to avoid excessively high temperatures.

Cheers,

Just wasn't sure if it was avoiding any building regulations., wasn't sure at what point (if any) a refurb had to meet current building regluations.

Ideally trvs should be fitted but am sure Bc wouldn't notice 😁
