Providing RCD protection to a socket circuit installed in the late 80s.

Found a flat down N to E fault.

Discuss pic during fault finding......

Reversed polarity in a JB and they couldn't (be bothered) to find it?

Ever find the other end of the cable?

I have both ends (now), both neatly taped. Fault was between these two sockets, now fixed. Been like it YEARS. So why the over taping? Remember, no RCD protection until I turn up.

I'd say a nail/screw between the red and cpc, the bodge of a repair done so it didn't blow the fuse.

I done similar once when a fuse kept intermittently tripping for a radial circuit, when meggared neutral was clear to earth but live was down, we temporary reversed the colours of the cable, when we returned to sort it we found mice had chewed through the live side of the T+E

Have the CPC and neutral been twisted and tapped together due the a broken neutral on one cable? i.e. cpc is used as a neutral on damaged cable.

Out of interest, where in Devon was this? I recall seeing something similar some years ago, also when adding RCD protection and looking for insulation faults. I can't remember why the colours were swapped or what was going on.

Guessing it was a ****** to replace the damaged cable? ... otherwise the chap 25 years years ago would have sorted it properly!

A few holes in the ceiling with a 6" hole saw, cable in wall in conduit, MF JB in ceiling. Cable had been nailed through in the ceiling void during construction.

It's been like it many years, sure it worked, but a damaged cable is a damaged cable! Swapping L and N to mask the fault is a bodge.
