Evening All,
Context:
Our boiler is on its way out and we’ve been quoted £400 for the repair (plate heat exchanger is fouled and the fill valve isn’t working). It’s a Worcester Bosch and anywhere between 12 - 15 years old. It’s been here since we bought the property.
An option I’m exploring and I discussed the same with the heating engineer today:
Install a horizontal hot water tank (he indicated 300 litre) that heats the water via immersion heaters and as a backup from a new boiler (during periods of high demand i.e. family visiting). The reason for this is to take advantage of my recently installed solar PV system that supplies a battery array. I also take advantage of a cheap night tariff to charge the batteries when there is no solar. At the moment there is a lot of space capacity and i am hardly using what is available.
On the above he indicated a horizontal heater would be fine in the loft (plenty of space) as it distributes the load evenly and there should the weight would be an issue on the rafters. Is this true or okay? Any comments?
In addition to the above he advised that the new boiler would only need to be 18KW as it would more or less just be for the heating and only really required for hot water when demand is high (maximum 2 weeks of a year when the family descend). He also indicated that this would save a lot on gas costs which makes sense. However, I am surprised at the reduction in the boiler rating since we still have 15 radiators to feed.
Could I gather the thoughts and any suggestions on the above from those more in the know than I?
Any clarifications or info I’ve failed to add please let me know and I will endeavour to provide it.

Edit: He quoted circa £3500 for the above but it was a guesstimate until I confirm and he will work up a detailed quote.
