Hi, can anyone advise on the rough costs of adding electricity to a new build - this will be a semi built on to my existing house. I assume this as to be carried out by a power company? Many Thanks

Not a clue - as you say the only people who can do it are the electricity board so only they can quote a price for you.

Depending on the run length - you are talking between £5000 and £10,000.
Whether this could be reduced by linking into your existing properties supply is one option to ask them to consider.

If you are flexible as to where the meter box is to be located then the cost can be reduced significantly.

The original quote for a new supply to my cottage was over £4000. This was for a cable trench, dug by the DNO staff, about 20 yards along the pavement from the nearest LV cable to my front door where the meter was to be. I then changed the location to the rear of the cottage to avoid excavations along the base of the wall.

If I dug the trench across my yard from the new meter location at the rear of the house to where my rear driveway went over the LV cable and installed a duct then the quote came down to around £3100. The DNO surveyor came to check on the plans and suggested moving the location of the joint from under the tarmac and put it instead under the grass verge at the side of the drive way. He said would reduce the cost a bit as being under a grass verge meant there was no requirement for TMA (traffic management act) activity and minimum costs of re-instatement. The final bill was just under £1000.
