I went past a detached new house under construction this morning. All the walls are up and the roof timbers are on but what is the point of an RSJ in this position?

Presumably the engineer has deemed it necessary, structurally.
Vaulted roof to bedrooms, inner wall pier yet to come up to support end of beam??

Agree with dreekoo, in the absence of floor joists, the ridge beam is required to keep the roof from spreading.
There to support the roof due to the low pitch and, no doubt, quite a few tons of concrete tiles. The beam will be picked up and supported by the inner skin of blockwork and the outer rafters extend to form the overhanging roof ladder and soffit.
