You will need to tweak the modem for a higher speed.
Your modem may be connection VIA v.92
V.92 decreases handshake time in a manner which decreases testing on the line. If you turn off v.92, you will get your old speed.

Esentially, 31k also depends on packet loss in the line. v.92 tries to detect that....you may also want to investigate the compression factor.

The telephone line is completely digital from your external junction box to the telco.....

New PC. Never managed to make it run fast. I changed the modem but no faster.

So I have given up now and got broadband (you are replying to a post from May/June).

Just had a skip through - I got put off whan I saw SIS. (joking)
One thing - when your 56k connects, what you see is the initial connection speed, try downloading a few things and see what speed you get, or do an online test, around 5k or above and theres no problems.
