Hi

I painted my hallway about four years ago in white emulsion.

It was beginning to look a bit grotty so I decided to repaint it this weekend. The new paint (Dulux pure brilliant white matt) has caused the old paintwork to bubble up and fall off revealing the original underlying paintwork.

What on earth have I done, and what do I need to do to fix it?

Thanks!

This is a sign of poor adhesion probably caused by the application of your existing system onto a shiny surface such as silk, would that be the case here.

That is quite possible, yes.

What's the most straightforward remedy?

Well there is'nt really an easy approach, what you need to do is to remove the existing layer of paint without if possible removing the underlying system. If this was achieved then you would only be creating more work for yourself, so I think that the use of either a hot air stripper or steamer should be avoided.

Try sanding and scraping the surface in order to remove it, have a go at this method yet if you find it difficult to achieve post back and we will offer you further advice.

PS a pole sander would be of help to you here and as for sandpaper try 120 grit.

Thanks. I'll have a go at a small area and see what happens. Wish I'd never started this now!
