I was looking for some assistance on new Patio Build.

Laying crazy paving for back garden patio/

Have dug a large hole about 30cm. (300mm). Patio are 50mm

I am putting in a sub base of smashed up bricks and also then some smaller pieces of fine aggregrate on top and hand compacting flat. 200mm of this.

I am then putting on top of this a layer of sharp sand or grit sand (same thing ? not sure) 10 parts with 1 part cement. 50mm of this. Do I need to wet this before or after mixing in the cement ?

I got most of this information from the paving expert site - but the site is very very detailed and difficult to relate to what I specifically want.

Is this too much for a back garden patio ?

Thanks

It seems like too substantial a hardcore - sometimes slabs are laid on S&C dots on soil.
But it all depends on how substantial you want the base to be, and what,if anything, is going to be on the patio?

Cement pre-mixed in as you propose requires no added moisture, it will set.

I'm assuming that you are not laying your patio tight to the house or garage?

100mm of sub-base is plenty for a domestic patio.

Definately don't lay any kind of dots/dabs its a total bodge and won't last.

Sharp and grit sand are the same thing.

For crazy paving you probably need a moist mix which is still quite firm so the bits can be tapped into it.
