How will you run the cable from your house to the telephone exchange ?

If you feel you can do that then come back for advice on the next impossible task in the process of DIY telephone line installations.

Why do you need another phone line? Getting a Voice Over IP (VOIP) service will be a lot cheaper than a second physical line, if you want another phone number and to be able to have 2 calls in progress at the same time.

You don't need to get BT (Retail) to install a new line in any case, almost any phone provider will arrange it (often more cheaply than BT Retail) although it will be BT openreach that do the cabling.

Is there some confusion here over an extension vs additional line?

If you wanted a fully independent line, and have decent broadband on your primary line, I too would advise a VoIP solution. Circa £10 a month or less.
