I'm looking to replace the acer that hasn't done too well in the middle of our front lawn, in fact it seems to have died completely now, all the leaves have turned brown and crispy (I've just run my hand up a branch and the lot's come off) and the branches almost look black in places like they've been burned...

So I'm looking for a new tree or shrub, minimum maintenance, none invasive and reasonably slow growing, but not so slow growing that it takes years to be noticeable, can anyone suggest anything like this?

It's not a massive lawn and this would be more of a feature right in the middle of it surrounded by gravel, you get the idea :D It's quite exposed to wind, isn't waterlogged as it's on a slight incline and only gets direct sun up to about 11am.

Thanks in advance!
