Can anyone please advise the best way of connecting a new pipe to the existing clay drain pipe.

The clay drain pipe is a 4" ID and (5.5" OD). I want to connect to this with new pipes leading to a new plastic soil vent

Note. there is not collar to the existing clay pipe as it has snapped off unfortunately. Fortunately it is a clean snap.

Is there some sort of coupler to connect new pipes to the existing clay one??

Plus would you recommend putting PVC or clay pipes back in to lead to the soil stack?

thank you in advance for any good advice.

PVC is far easier to work with, decent saw, a file and some jointing lubricant is all you need.

Sounds like you have the old salt glazed pipes. A 'Fernco' connector as Seco suggests or one of these: http://www.wickes.co.uk/PVCu-Soil-To-Clay-Drain-Connector/invt/432046 will take you from a clay spigot to 110mm uPVC. Chamfer the end of the clay with an angle grinder before fitting though. The new pipework will need bedding in peagravel for protection.

Not for joining to clayware. That fitting is for 110mm plastic pipes, and would be used to 'graft' a junction into an existing run. You need either of the fittings we've shown to join to clay, then take your new plastic pipework from that.
